My first experience with IS 101 vs. now

I am taking IS 101 for the second time now and I have noticed many differences from the first time around already. I took it first in freshman year of college, it has been a while since then. The curriculum has been restructured twice after that. Back then whether you pass or failed this class was entirely based on three exams. All the activities we had to do in class was mostly for practice purposes. this time however, there is a lot of assignment for basic technology literacy that are super helpful and can be implemented in everyday interactions. On top of that we still get educated on Microsoft office which are important in school and career setting.

  1. The course, IS101 Introduction to Information Technology, is constantly evolving with the digital landscape!

Very glad to hear you find this curriculum more meaningful :-)

I am pleased to have you in IS101-3010, Spring 2022, Rediet ^_^

  2. Sounds like I signed up for this course at the perfect time! lol

I agree, the curriculum is easy to digest and implement, I feel like I'm learning a new shortcut or feature in every lesson. lol

  3. That's unfortunate that the curriculum from your previous IS 101 was so brutal. Only having exams to dictate your grade sounds very tough and a bit unfair, in my opinion. Luckily this professor gives you more opportunities to fluctuate your grade with assignments and labs.

  4. This is interesting: I did not know you could take this class twice. However, with the pace of how technology is moving, I won't be surprise if I have to take this class again some time in the future. On the plus side, I think this class is designed for us to do well though.

  5. That sounds so terrible for your grade to be based on exams. I think I saw many mentions of that on Rate My Professor, so it must have really changed from then. I also agree that the activities we do in the course are very helpful.

  7. The pass or fail with three exams is still like that for some classes. I'm in an 8 week class with that right now, it's just the classes that you pick and checking what people are saying about the class on rate my professor.

  8. I think courses like this are extremely valuable as not everyone gets the opportunity to get as familiar or proficient with technology as others. These are very important skills to gain and maintain in today's societal culture and it can be difficult to learn on your own.

  9. As somebody who tests poorly, I can definitely see what a challenge a class set up that way would be...I don't really think it's an accurate way to gauge whether people understand the course material or not, either. You have one bad day, and your grade is impacted pretty severely. Its always just seemed harsh, and not effective to me.

  11. I am taking math this semester and it is all quizzes and tests so I feel much more pressure from classes like that where grades are not distributed between other categories.

  13. I had taken this class in the past as well years ago. I too have notice how it has changed. I feel like I will be doing better this time around.

  14. I think interacting with the software is useful because often when you are studying for a test you are studying to pass the test but that does not mean you have a clear understanding of the material and how to use it.

  15. There are definitely true daily tips and tricks we can apply on a day in day out basis. Truthfully, I cannot wait to discover what this class has to offer.

  16. Yeah, when he mentioned being able to learn how to use Microsoft Office, I got super excited since I do know how to work with some of the programs. I was super happy to know that we would learn how to use it well. Especially Excel, since it is so detailed, being able to learn what to use for what formula or how to use the formulas is something that I'm super excited.
